Over the past few weeks, I've been deeply immersed in the world of Aussie Nostalgia, not just as an observer but also as an active content creator. This experience has offered a wealth of insights, from understanding the importance of inclusivity in digital spaces to strategising my content based on comparative analysis. Along the way, I continue to navigate the complexities of copyright issues across different platforms while constantly reflecting on my own biases as a qualitative researcher and fan.
Prioritising Inclusion and Sensitivity
Inclusion isn't just a buzzword; it's a necessary component for generating content that resonates with a broad audience. Most of my posts are derived from the ABC network, a media outlet with a relatively good history of inclusive and culturally diverse representation (ABC, 2023). Beyond just sourcing from ABC, I also take extra care in moderating conversations on my platforms. Whether it's comments or direct messages, I strive for an environment where every viewer feels seen and respected. To enforce this, I've implemented a zero-tolerance policy against hate speech and derogatory comments. Both TikTok and Instagram have features that allow for the auto-banning of specific terms. I've activated these settings to create a safer space, essentially letting the platform do some of the heavy lifting in maintaining an inclusive atmosphere.
Comparing and Contrasting for Strategy Improvement
Every week, I allocate time to compare other creators in the Aussie nostalgia space. One notable account is ABCZaus, which consistently leads in audience engagement and content quality. They post between 5-8 times weekly and have a knack for incorporating actors from iconic shows into their content. My analytics reveal that my highest engagement occurs around the fringe of the standard 9-5 workday. By drawing parallels and contrasts between my approach and those of others, I continually refine my strategy to ensure it aligns with what's both effective and trending (Moore, 2023).
Navigating Flexibility and Copyright Issues
Recently, I've encountered copyright obstacles on Instagram, a problem I've yet to face on TikTok. This discrepancy suggests that TikTok's newer status might mean its copyright policies are still evolving (Destination Digital, 2022). Moving forward, I plan to adjust my content on each platform to conform to their respective rules. For Instagram, this means offering exclusive, copyright-friendly clips. This not only mitigates legal issues but also provides an incentive for my audience to follow me across different platforms.
The Importance of Reflexivity and Identifying Biases
Being involved in qualitative research, I recognise the unavoidable imprint of my own biases on my work. Childhood memories tied to ABC3 content can inadvertently influence my content choices and interactions (Yildirim, et al., 2013). Acknowledging this, I strive for a level of neutrality and transparency in my work (Moore, 2023). I'm not just a content creator but also a representation of ABC, making it undoubtedly important to maintain unbiased interactions.
Key Insights:
- Platform-Specific Strategies: Understanding each social media platform's unique guidelines and processes is crucial.
- The Unwavering Appeal of Nostalgia: My audience's appetite for nostalgic content shows no signs of diminishing, underlining its efficacy as a content theme (Ola, 2018).
